The themes in my work have remained constant for the past 25 years: The search for spirituality in contemporary society; The meaningful constellations of circumstance that ensconce each of us. These perpetuate the wilfulness of modern (wo)men to continue to seek equilibrium in his/her existence; To become re-enchanted. To become aware of our interrelationships.
The two images are from the two sides from the same enamel on plexiglass artwork. It is wondrous that the two images are completely different from one another since I paint only one side of the plexiglass. (One would expect a mere reversal on the other side.) The side which I paint is referred to as the INTELLECTUAL side as I consciously make the marks, the strokes and the layers. The other side is created on its own – as a result of my efforts giving birth to the ‘painted’ side is referred to as the INTUITIVE side as the image is created unconsciously and becomes the foundation for the finished work. I work by layering the enamels; a slow process. The final finished painting becomes the INTELLECTUAL side, complete with all the layers. The INTUITIVE side is the first initial layer and represents the instinctively sparked naturalness of the paint as it is applied and set in the beginning.
The work is suspended from the ceiling, viewed from both sides exciting how there are 2 distinct paintings on the 2 sides. The INTELLECTUAL side is different from the INTUITIVE side. Marvellous how this act of painting, specifically the layering on the behest of the appearance of the piece – illustrates the conceal / reveal aspects of our personalities: how we conceal our true selves revealing only the intellectualized self to those around us, all the while eclipsing the real, honest, unadulterated aspects of the intuitive. Public self vs. Private self.
These enamel on plexiglass works address the aspect its facileness – of the behavioural sociology of mankind in contemporary society. They speak of the intellectualization component that relates to the intuitiveness component of our being as we, emotional beings, outwardly present to society. It is the social stance that develops from the interrelation between the two.
It is these plexiglass panels which intrigued the curator / director of Pool in New York. The Pool Art Fair is a major component in the Basel Art Fair taking place in Miami, Florida in December, 2012. My work has been selected to be a part of this exciting exhibition.
